Save on electricity with community solar

Community solar lets you subscribe to a share of a local solar farm and receive credits on your regular utility bill, often saving 5–20% with no panels, no installation and no upfront cost. We’ll check whether a project is enrolling in your utility territory and connect you with the developer or subscriber organization.

Worth knowing

Three things to understand before you compare

How it works

A developer builds a solar farm in your utility’s service area. You subscribe to a portion of its output, the utility applies credits to your bill for the energy it produces, and you pay the subscriber organization for those credits at a discount.

Where it’s available

Community solar depends on state law. Programs are active in states such as New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Minnesota, Colorado, Maine, Delaware and Oregon, plus the District of Columbia, with more launching.

Two bills, one savings

Most subscribers keep paying their utility (now with credits) and pay the solar provider a discounted amount for those credits. Some providers consolidate everything on one bill.

Community Solar questions

Answers before you start

Do I need to own my home?
No. Renters, condo owners and homeowners can all subscribe as long as the electric account is in your name and your utility participates.
Is there an upfront cost?
Typically no. Most subscriptions have no sign-up fee; you pay for credits after they appear on your bill.
What if I move?
Many programs let you transfer the subscription within the same utility territory or cancel with notice. Terms vary by project, so read the subscription agreement before signing.
Will my utility change?
No. Your utility still delivers power and sends your bill. The credits simply reduce it.
Is this a government program?
Community solar is enabled by state policy but offered by private developers and subscriber organizations. We are a private company that connects you with those providers.

Disclosure. Direct Media Services, LLC does not own, operate or sell subscriptions to solar projects and is not a utility. Savings figures are illustrative; actual savings depend on the project, your usage and the subscription agreement you sign with the provider. Availability depends on your state, utility territory and project capacity.
